It Finally Feels like Autumn

This past Monday not only brought us rain, but also, finally, the feel of Autumn. At least for me. The dry, colorful leaves scooting across the sidewalk and streets. The crisp, cool air. Brrr.

I love Autumn.

Standing Guard. . .Kind Of.

What's with all these tree photos, you ask?

Beats me. I'm simply walking along and bam! A tree shows its uniqueness to me. And, we have quite an amazing lot in and around Hollister, thank goodness.

This tree—some kind of conifer, which I want to say is a Monterey Cypress—hangs out in front of the San Benito County Tax Collector's Office on Fifth Street.

A Happy Palm Tree

Isn't that a gorgeous palm tree? It's huge, too. Quite huge. The Husband and I came across it as we were walking through Briggs Alley the other day. I like how it happily waves over the fences.

See you tomorrow.

The Victorian "Pumpkin House"

This two-bedroom Victorian-style house on Fifth Street was built around 1900 for a young couple named L.H and Myrtle Barker, who were married the previous year.

The house is on the self-guided tour of historical houses in Hollister. It was recently on sale, and according to the property details, the Victorian was restored in 2003. It's known as the Pumpkin House because of its colors.

The Three R's

Recycle, repurpose, and reuse. This bicycle planter that the Husband and I saw on our walk in Downtown Hollister fits the bill. Trés cute, don't you think?

A Hitching Post

On the north side of Hawkins Street, between Monterey and San Benito Streets, is this concrete hitching post from a long time ago. Perhaps as far back as the early 1900s. If anyone knows more about this hitching post, please leave a comment.

Under the Shade of Pinks

On the Husband's and my walk the other day, we stopped under a towering bush of pink flowers on Hawkins Street. Because the flowers were a brilliant pink and oh so pretty. Because the bush casted delightful shade to rest beneath for a bit. Because it was a nice view of Washington Street.

See you tomorrow.

Up Close — The Five Palms

From nearly everywhere you look in Downtown Hollister, you can see the five palm trees that mark the once-upon-a-time baseball field. It wasn't until the other day that I checked them out at their home base by the old train depot on Prospect Avenue.

Another Interesting Sky

This was late afternoon while walking in the neighborhood across from Sunnyslope School. Amazing sky, don't you think?

The Other Clock Tower

Clock tower in Hollister?

I immediately think of the 106-year old clock tower on the corner of Fourth and San Benito Streets. But, that may not be the one that someone is seeking, especially if a person is looking for the pet store, car wash, or ale house that's by the clock tower.

Yup. That clock tower in the picture, which is in the Clocktower Plaza on McCray Street, near Meridian Street.

One of My Favorite Hollister Things

The trees lining Monterey Street make that street one of my favorite ones in Downtown Hollister. This scene is in front of the original Hazel Hawkins Hospital at the corner of Monterey and Hawkins Streets. Do you have a favorite Hollister street to walk, bicycle, or drive?

The Rock-Eating Monster

The Husband says this huge monstrous system grinds up gravel. I've never gone by it when it's working. Be kinda cool to see the monster in action. It's near McCray Street, south of Hillcrest Road.

The Corner of Sixth & Monterey Streets

I like that big old palm tree on the northwest corner of Sixth and Monterey Streets, the one in front of the Porter House. It's a great place to pause for shade while walking.

Across the street is Hoyle Plaza. Ever wonder who Hoyle was?

Longtime locals remember Millard Hoyle, Jr., the owner and publisher of the Free Lance from 1941 to 1986. He took it over when his father died, who purchased the paper in 1917. The building on Sixth Street that houses Mr. O's Academy used to be the headquarters of the once-upon-a-time daily newspaper.

Morning on Sixth Street

You're looking east on Sixth Street, across from Dunne Park. See how the rock wall bends. That's the work of the Calaveras Fault. Amazing, huh?

This scene reminds me of the verse from the Simon & Garfunkel song, "Feeling Groovy":
Got no deeds to do, no promises to keep
I'm dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep
Let the morning time drop all its petals on me
Life, I love you all is groovy
Happy Monday to you all!

Beneath the Trees

Mmmm, I enjoy the shade of the lovely trees on Monterey Street, near Fifth Street.

Rain?

The other day, the Husband and I pedaled our bicycles by the tomato cannery. I felt very tiny droplets fall on me. I looked up. Ah! Tomato mist. The droplets even tasted a bit tomato-y.

See Da Tree?

Isn't this very, very tall and huge cedar tree on Fifth Street gorgeous? Just think of all the Hollister history it has lived through so far.

A Sunday Flashback -- Early 1990s

You're looking north on San Benito Street. Not much different, right?

Look closer.  Johnny's Bar & Grill doesn't have the mural we see today on it. That gets painted in 1996.

See The Vault building on the corner, across the street. No? It's the two-story green building. The Vault won't be open for another several more years.
