I Spy . . . the First Biker through the Gate

I spy with my little eye the first biker to rumble down San Benito Street when the gates to the 2016 Hollister Independence Rally officially opened this morning.  This annual biker rally is a three-day event, ending on Sunday, July 3.

Thousands of bikers are expected to descend onto our small city, which some bikers describe as the Birthplace of the American Biker. If you want to know how our town got that designation, click here.

Admission to the rally is free. There shall be lots of food and drink, activities, and three stages for bands and other live entertainment. For details, head over to the Hollister Independence Rally web site.

I Spy . . . Dolls!

I spy with my little eye dolls of all types, shapes, and sizes throughout Sherry's Adoptable Dolls and Antiques in Hollister.

I also spy women's vintage and antique hats, purses (oooh, a black velvet clutch made in Italy), china cups, costume jewelry, sheet music, and much more.

This treasure trove is in a cute vintage house located at 890 San Benito Street, between Hazel's Thrift Shop and Grunnagle's parking lot. It's owned by the lovely Sherry Dolfin. She offers so many delightful things from our past to rediscover and enjoy again.

Sherry's Adoptable Dolls and Antiques is open on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

I Spy . . . an Old Coke Machine

I spy with my little eye a once-upon-a-time Coca Cola machine at the Ivancovich's cherry stand on Buena Vista Road. It's where you can wash any cherries that you just purchased and want to eat immediately. Who doesn't want to do that?

The cherry stand is open every day, from around 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. until the cherry season ends. The season doesn't last long, so get your fresh cherries soon. Yummm!

I Spy . . . Bongo Drums

I spy with my little eye bongo drums in the park on top of Park Hill.  Yes, you can play them. They make a pretty cool sound.

I Spy . . . a Barn

I spy with my little eye an oldtime barn on the north side of Airline Highway (aka Highway 25), across from the Ridgemark Golf & Country Club.

Happy Face

The Victorian house sporting the happy face is the bed and breakfast in Hollister called the Joshua Inn Bed & Breakfast. I haven't stayed there yet, but I've had the opportunity to peek inside. It's warm and delightful. The owners, Tricia and Greg, are friendly souls who sport their own happy faces. No doubt they spoil their guests with sugar and spice and everything nice.

Today is Our World Tuesday, a long-time weekly meme in which participants from around the world share their world. Check it out here.

Enterprise Road

You're looking east on Enterprise Road, near the intersection with Southside Road. The mountain in the distance is Santa Ana Peak.

The May Carnival

Anyone noticed the trucks full of carnival rides parked on San Benito Street next to the high school earlier this week?

Yup. It's time for the annual May carnival that San Benito High School has been hosting for the last several decades. It'll be in the football parking lot, starting tomorrow evening, May 6, 5 p.m., and running until Sunday, May 8, 5 p.m.

Have fun!

La Bamba

La Bamba is the theme of one of the murals painted on utility boxes in historical downtown (or is it downtown historical?) Hollister. In 2015, the City of Hollister funded a mural arts project, employing the talents of local artists Joel Esqueda and Roland Resendiz to create five murals that represent  different cultural aspects of San Benito County.

La Bamba was a 1987 movie written and directed by Luis Valdez, who is the founder of El Teatro CampesiƱo, based in San Juan Bautista, and considered the father of Chicano theater in the United States. The movie is a biographical story about rock-and-roll legend Ritchie Valens who turned the Mexican folk tune "La Bamba" into a popular rock-and-roll song in the 1950s. Unfortunately, Valens' life was struck short, along with Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper, when their airplane crashed upon take off.

Some parts of La Bomba were filmed in San Benito County.

Today is Monday Murals, a weekly meme hosted by Oakland Daily Photo, at which I'm linking up. Click here to see murals in other parts of the world.

Driving at Twilight

The Husband turned right from Highway 156 onto Union Road. I leaned out the window and the camera went Click!

The Diablo Range

I pedaled up Hillcrest Road on the bicycle this morning. Puff, puff. Seeing the Three Sisters and Santa Ana Mountain near the top of the road was worth the struggle. Every time.

A Southeasterly View of Hollister

This past January, I took this photo from Park Hill. Can you tell where San Benito Street is? See those tall white buildings on the right in the distance? That's Hazel Hawkins Hospital.

Saturday in the Park

Got kids or grandkids? Fun is waiting for them and you on top of Park Hill.

A few weeks ago, the Husband and I wandered around the playground equipment that was recently installed. It was very tempting to test everything out. Okay, we did bang out a few beats on the plastic drums. They sounded like real drums! Giggle.

Want to know some cool history about Park Hill, besides old fogeys telling you that when they were kids they rolled down the hill on cardboard? Check out Vista Park Hill. What's in a Name? by Robin Pollard at Benitolink.

Thank You Very Much!

It's tough making a brick-and-mortar business succeed, regardless of whether you're new or been around for a long while, or whether the economic times are poor or good. Making the decision to say "That's it! We need to close our doors." is a hard thing to do as well.

These are a few of the shops and restaurants that said Good-bye to us in Hollister in 2015. Thank you very much for your good cheer and service!

She's closed in June after 23 years of being in business. It was one of the few independent clothing shops specializing in women's apparel in town. Although her clothing shop is no more, its owner Sheila Stevens can be found at her other two businesses in Hollister, The Heavenly Bakery  on San Benito Street and She's Consignment Store, at the corner of Fifth and East Streets.

Swanky Finds, a thrift and consignment shop, closed earlier this year. The fun shop was next to the Country Rose Cafe on San Benito Street.

Closing the doors of Muenzer's Keys & Teez in October marked the end of 105 years of Muenzer's presence in Hollister. In 2012, Muenzer's downsized and moved next door to its original storefront on Fifth Street.

3rd Base Burger Bar, formerly Grillin & Chillin Downtown, on the main drag closed several weeks ago. However, we can still enjoy the hospitality of the owners, Chuck and Joann Frowein, at their two other establishments—Roadhouse Grillin & Chillin, corner of Highway 156 and Mitchell Road, and Grillin & Chillin Alehouse on McCray Street.

The Best of Times Cafe  served its last meals to customers earlier this month. Paul and his colleagues purchased the cafe in July, 2014.  The cafe opened in 1996 as the Hard Times Cafe. Somewhere in time the first owner was forced to change its name because a franchise chain on the East coast owned the name.

Coming Soon: The Fairfield Inn

A new hotel is going up on Gateway Drive, which is the next intersection after you turn right from Highway 25 towards Downtown Hollister. The Fairfield Inn will have four floors with anywhere between 70 and 90 rooms.

Construction began last April and is expected to be open for business in April, 2016, according to this BenitoLink article.
