Twelve Days into 2013

Dear Take 25 to Hollister readers, hello!

Here's my first photo of  2013. I wanted a photo of the big brown bird on top of the clock tower  in the  Clocktower Plaza's parking lot on McCray Street. It seemed out of place. It didn't look like a hawk so I wondered if it could've been a falcon or a young golden eagle. Anyone else saw it last Wednesday evening?

So, here we are twelve days into the New Year and look! Five new, exciting things have happened.
  • The Pinnacles National Monument has been upgraded to drum roll, please. . . Pinnacles National Park. It joins the same status as the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and Yellowstone National Parks. Numero 59, the Pinnacles National Park is. For a complete story, check out this Mercury News link.
  • The Hollister Motorcycle Rally is baaaack. Yep. The City Council approved the event earlier this week. So, mark your calendars for July 5 and July 6, 2013. To learn more, check out this Cycle World link.
  • The Hollister Downtown Association received notice from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that it has the exclusive right to use the logo Hollister {the original}. So, there you go Abercrombie & Fitch with your imaginary beach town called Hollister.
  • Local artist Shannon Grissom is offering Creative Escapes every Thursday in her art studio. What fun! Customers will have the opportunity to draw, paint, decorate masks, and make collages. For information about her Creative Escapes, click this link to go to Shannon's Web site.
  • BenitoLink.com is up and running. It's an online web portal for San Benito County residents to learn about local news and events, as well as a venue for residents to offer their opinions and discuss issues that concern them. Go ahead, go check BenitoLink.com out.

Dinner Theater at Paine's

Tomorrow night (February 10) is the first of nine showings of Lend Me A Tenor, a comedy full of sophisticated craziness. The play was written by Ken Ludwig, and received several Tony nominations when it was performed on Broadway in 1989.

Hollister's production is presented by the San Benito Stage Company at Paine's Restaurant on 421 East Street. Evening performances starting at 7 p.m. will be on February 10, 11, 17,  18, 24,  and 25; and afternoon performances starting at 2 p.m. will be on February 12, 19, and 25.

Tickets include the cost of the meal. $35 at the door; $30, if bought beforehand. For more info, check out the San Benito Stage Company Web site. For the menu, check out Paine's Facebook page about the event.

100 Things I Like: Country Rose Gallery & Frame

Have you ever been in the Country Rose Gallery & Frame on San Benito Street? That shop right next to the gas station on the corner of San Benito & Seventh? No, I didn't think so.

You don't need to be an artist or have something to frame to want or need to walk through the door. I'm not an artist, though I wish. It's the art supplies that lure me in. I'm such a sucker for pastel chalk.

Christmas is around the corner.  If you're willing to think outside of the box, you can find lots of great ideas for gifts or stocking stuffers there. Trust me.

Note to FCC: Honestly, I wasn't paid or given anything to write what I just wrote. So, move along.

100 Things I Like: Recology San Benito County

Recology San Benito County offers a comprehensive garbage and recycling system, which I have taken for granted. Hazardous waste, yard waste, recyclable items, electronic waste, you name it, Recology can probably pick it up or tell you where to drop it off. Here's its Web site link to access a lot of info about recycling and garbage collection.

By the way, check out the sides of the Recology garbage trucks for student art work that won in its annual poster contest.

100 Things I Like: The Community Band Concerts

2010 Pacific Brass Band Concert

It'll soon be that time of the year again when we'll have a chance to listen to the Pacific Brass Band  and the Watsonville Community Band. Both bands are composed of  musicians from San Benito, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Monterey counties.

The Pacific Brass Band will perform a concert on Sunday, November 13, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church. This is a fundraiser for the local YMCA.

The Watsonville Community Band will perform its Holiday Concert on Sunday, December 11, 2011,  at 2 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building.

100 Things I Like: Local Products

Kathina, the owner of San Benito Bene—
the local place to buy local products!

We really have a lot of wonderful goods created and produced by local foodies, artists, craftspeople,  farmers, and others. I'll name a few:
Bell Hill Goat Milk Lotion
San Benito Gold Honey
Sons of Sicily Olive Oil
Pinnacle Apple Juice (Organic)
Vista Notes
Marich Confectionary
Art of Shannon Grissom

And, you know what, you can now go to this one shop in Hollister to buy these products and other local goods, Monday through Friday. San Benito Bene is the place!

Today, Saturday, San Benito Bene continues its grand opening, starting at noon. You'll have a chance to taste some of the local foods that are available in the shop. Check it out, if you can. The shop is located at 615 San Benito Street, the same side of the block as Heavenly Bakery and Best of Times Cafe.

Christmas shopping is going to be so easy for me this year.

Veronica's Art of Dance

The sign in the window of Veronica's Art of Dance was just too cute to not take a photo of it. Veronica's is another new business that recently opened downtown. The dance studio is located at 750 San Benito Street. According to the business's Web site, Hollister is its second location. Its first is in San Jose.

Sparkle, Sparkle

Beautiful, isn't it? You'll find this sparkle-sparkle window on San Benito Street in downtown Hollister . Take a walk downtown to see it in person. Also, check out the Blak Sage Gallery of Fine Art while you're down there. You vintage car lovers ought to enjoy the current exhibit.

Art All Around

The swirly part of this sign always catches my eye when I'm traveling north on East Street, between South and Seventh Streets. The swirl reminds me of the yin-yang symbol. It also makes me think of 1960s pop art. So, where will you find this sign? In the yard of the McKinnon Lumber Company.

The Hollister Free Lancer

May 16 to May 22 Theme: The Little Details in Downtown Hollister

Once upon a time this used to be the icon for the Hollister Free Lance. Pretty cool, isn't it?

You can find this little plaque on the building on San Benito Street (near South) that's now home to Java Bagels. I'm guessing that the newspaper used to have offices there until it moved to Sixth Street. The local newspaper has been around since the late 1800s. Click here if you'd like to read the December 10, 1886 issue.

Stained Glass Art at St. Benedict Church

St. Benedict Church on Fairview Road is a beautiful structure, both in and out. Check out the stained glass work on its doors. Do you recognize the image on this part of St. Benedict's door?

The Birdhouses at She's

Last week, the husband and I checked out the bird house display in She's windows. The very cool birdhouses were built  by local David Guttirez. Also, cool was the fact that the ladies at the shop let us step into the window so I could take a photo.
