Shop Locally: Muenzer's Keys & Teez

Muenzer's is alive and well, despite the rumors that it no longer exists. When the business closed its doors at 221 Fifth Street as Muenzer's Cyclery and Sports Center in 2012, it immediately began operating next door, 217 Fifth Street, as Muenzer's Locksmithing. Back in its original storefront, the family-run business has already expanded and now sells local apparel such as Baler sweatshirts, along with offering locksmith services. Today, the 103-year-old local business is formally known as Muenzer's Keys & Teez. Way to go, Muenzer's!

Farewell to Penny Wise Drug

After nearly 66 years in business, Penny Wise Drug, at 549 San Benito Street, will be locking its doors for the last time on January 12, 2014.  Big, big Bummer! I will miss seeing Joan, Jeanne, and Stephen Rosati in downtown Hollister.

Starting today, Penny Wise Drug is holding it going-out-of-business sale. And, the sale is a bargain. Discounts range between 30 to 60 percent off.

Pharmacists Jeanne and Stephen filled their last prescriptions on December 26, closing the only independent pharmacy in Hollister -- for that matter, San Benito County. All of their customers' files have been moved to the recently opened Walgreens at the corner of Tres Pinos Road and Highway 25. For me, it's already not the same.

I will miss the comfort of opening the back door to Penny Wise Drug and calling out, "Hello!" and hearing a welcoming  greeting from one or two, and sometimes all three of the Rosati siblings.

I will miss looking at their shelves of OTC items and seeing something that I recall my dad bought from Penny Wise Drug when I was a kid many years ago.

I will miss being able to purchase items that I will now have to order online or wait until my next trip to a natural grocery store in Santa Cruz.

I will miss the professional advice of Jeanne and Stephen, as well as seeing what gorgeous bohemian skirt Jeanne is wearing and what handsome Hawaiian shirt Stephen has on.

I will miss chatting with the lovely, lively Joan who for the longest time I called Carol and she never corrected me.

Sigh.

I am very fortunate to have experienced the helpful cheer of a small business and hometown wonder as Penny Wise Drug. And, I thank you very much, Rosati Family, for your wonderful assistance and service to my family and to our community. Best wishes to you, Joan, Jeanne, Stephen, and Marie on your new adventures!

The Hollister Farmers Market

If it's Wednesday, then it must be the Farmers Market Day in historical downtown Hollister.

Every Wednesday, from now until September 25, 2013, you can get your fresh local produce and meats,  breads, sausages, honey, and handcrafted food and wares at our farmers market. It's open from 3 to 7 pm. The produce and food vendors are lined along Fifth Street, between San Benito and Monterey, with many of the take-out fare in the parking lot between Fifth and the lawn in front of the parking garage. On the lawn, you can find craftspeople and nonprofit organizations, as well as entertainment.

Enjoy!

Z is for Zazzy

Zazzy as in feeling stylish while wearing this bling of a gown. This was in one of the display windows of Sylvia's  Jewelry and Gifts on San Benito Street, near Fourth Street.

I'm been going through the alphabet this month as part of the A to Z Blogging Challenge. This post marks the end of the event. Whoo-hoo! I think I deserve a zazzy treat. To check out other A to Z participants,  click here.

Nob Hill has put out displays of veggies and flowers that are ready to go into the ground. A sure sign that Spring has arrived.

What will you be planting in your gardens this year?

The theme for this week, March 10 to March 17, is Spring has Sprung.

Sparkling Sparkles on San Benito Street

Have you driven or walked through the sparkling lights of downtown Hollister yet? Photographs do not do the sparkle justice. We can thank the Hollister Downtown Association for making San Benito Street look so festive after nightfall. So, one, two, three. Thank you, Hollister Downtown Association!

FYI: Drapoel, Penny Wise Drugstore, San Benito Bene, Serendipity Gifts, and other shops downtown will be open both Saturday and Sunday. Bertuccio's out on Highway 25 and Union Road always is open on the weekend. That's a good source for local food gifts, too. If you need addresses and Web sites for Hollister shops, go to this page and scroll down to the links.

A note to FCC: I keep telling you, I'm not being paid or given stuff to mention local businesses. I just like them and the people who own and work there. I want them to do well, because I want to keep buying stuff there.

Shop Locally: Garlic Festival Foods

I can remember when the fields along Highway 25, near the 101 exit, were full of garlic. That was always a comforting sign I was heading home. There's nothing like the yummy taste of garlic. The smell, too. It is definitely heaven when I drive through that very sweet spot by Gilroy Foods where the strongest aroma of garlic is in the air. Ahhhhhhh.

With the smell and taste of garlic in your mind, have you ever tried any of the spice blends or sauces made by the Garlic Festival Foods?

I hadn't until the Holiday Cheer Shop Hop that took place at the beginning of December. Garlic Festival Foods was a participant. I had no idea its headquarters was located in Hollister; so, of course, I had to check it out. Jackpot! Another source for unique local gifts—garlic mustard, garlic olives, garlic salsa, garlic marinade, garlic condiment, garlic soap, and much more.

Garlic Festival Foods has been in business for 26 years. It is located at 1803 Shelton Drive (off of Fallon Road, by the Hollister Airport), and is open to customers from 8:30 a.m to 2:30 p.m., Monday to Thursday. For more information about Garlic Festival Foods, check out their Web site and/or their Facebook page. Their products are also available at San Benito Bene in downtown Hollister.

To FCC: Does taking a tiny package of spice from the  Garlic Festival Foods' freebie basket for customers count? If so, I did do that. And, does tasting the free samples of food given to customers that day count as well? I did do that, too.

Holliwood

Holliwood is a new boutique in downtown Hollister. Its slogan is Bringing a little Hollywood to Hollister. How cool is that!

The shop is owned by Christie Martin, who has been a jewelry designer for 20 years. She has worked in the jewelry fashion industry for 10 of those years in Hollywood. Cameron Diaz, the Olsen twins, Beyonce, Pink, Cher, Mariah Carey, and Christina Aguilera, among other actresses and singers have bought and worn her jewelry.

Holliwood carries jewelry and clothing at affordable prices, according to its Web site. It's located at 748 San Benito Street (west side), near the corner of South Street. For more information, check out the shop's Web site and Facebook page.

James Bond...no, Richardo Montalban would look hot in this, don't you think?

Was it the pretty lady that got Santa confused in San Juan Bautista? Or, the fact that today is 12/12/12?

This Saturday (December 15) is Visions of San Juan—A Holiday Stroll Through Time. It will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

A Hodgepodge of Announcements

Benito Link

Check out a new free source for local news. It's called Benito Link, an on-line web portal created by Vision San Benito. Already, I've learned that the new Hollister Mayor was sworn in on Monday; Immaculate Conception, the Catholic Church in Tres Pinos, celebrated 120 years; and the San Benito Homeless Shelter has been open since November 1. The site just recently went up, so give it time to develop and grow.  It's nice to have another source of news and coming events and such for our community. Buena fortuna, Benito Link.

Holiday Events

Support Local Businesses

The Holiday Arts and Crafts Boutique  is going on at Blak Sage Gallery until December 15, 2012.   It features arts, crafts, cards, and gifts made by local artists and craftspeople, including Shannon Grissom, Jane Rekedal, Carole Belliveau, Kent Child, and Kathleen Sheridan, among others.

Wednesday Night Lights
Several shops on the 600 block in downtown Hollister are doing a "Wednesday Night Lights". Tomorrow, December 12, and next Wednesday, December 19, the following shops will be open until 7:30 p.m.
Holiday Shopping Hours
Many local shops and businesses have holiday hours for our convenience. They're keeping their doors open later one or more days during the week. For example, Holliwood, a new shop in downtown Hollister (748 San Benito Street), has late hours. Some Hollister shops and most, if not all, San Juan Bautista shops are open on Sundays. So, if you haven't had a chance to check out local shops, here's your chance this year.

Don't know what shops, restaurants, businesses, and such are in our county? Check out these links:
You can also find a listing of some shops and restaurants at this Take 25 to Hollister post.

A note to FCC: Just so you know, no one has paid me to mention any of the above businesses. Just call me alturistic, I suppose.

The 2012 Holiday Cheer Shop Hop

The baskets from the 2011 shop hop.

Psssssssst. Have you heard what's happening this Saturday, December 1?

It's the 2012 San Benito County Holiday Cheer Shop Hop. Whooo-hooo. Eighty-eight (88!) shops, restaurants, galleries, artisans, services, salons and spas, agriculturists, and nonprofit groups throughout the county are taking part in this second annual event. We're talking 88 local businesses from Hollister, San Juan Bautista, Tres Pinos, and Aromas.

These 88 local businesses have generously contributed items that shoppers have the opportunity of winning by entering their name at each business they visit on Saturday. The Holiday Cheer Shop Hop organizers are creating 15 (15!) lavish baskets that may include products such as chocolates, wine, olive oil, note cards, and lotions, as well as gift certificates to restaurants, shops, spas, financial services, and so on. Some businesses will also be raffling their own basket of goodies, so you never know what you may find.

By the way, did I say it is all free? Yep, it's free to enter for a chance for one of the 15 awesome baskets. No purchases necessary, but hey! you never know what you may want or need to buy for yourself and others. And, like wise mathematicians out there might say, your chances of winning increase with each additional business you visit.  So, here you go. Be Part of the Cash Mob!

A Cash Mob is happening this Saturday, May 19, at one lucky random business in downtown Hollister.

Cash Mob? you ask.

It's a new strategy that's going on nationwide to support local businesses. A "mob" of people choose one store and each person spends at least $20 there.  The store has no idea its going to be mobbed with customers.

Hollister Downtown Association (HDA) is hosting Saturday's event. Interested? Show up at the parking lot on the corner of Sixth and East streets at 11 a.m.  with your 20 bucks. From there, you and the rest of the mob will head to the selected business. HDA isn't saying until then. For more details, check out this link.

This A Way, Folks!

That's the Swank Farms sign on San Felipe Road. It's pointing the way to its produce stand, which, unfortunately, is still closed.

However, I like to think that right now the sign is pointing to downtown Hollister. Yep, 'cause tomorrow, May 2, starts the Hollister Farmers Market, and you'll certainly find the Swank Farms there with their yummy produce.

The Hollister Farmers Market runs every Wednesday, from 3 to 7 p.m. all the way up to September 26.  Same place: Fifth Street, between San Benito and Monterey streets.

Hurrah for farmers markets!

Natural Wonders

"It's open," said the Husband.

Fortunately, a parking space was available right in front of Natural Wonders, the new health food store and deli in San Juan Bautista.  Ever since we saw its sign go up months ago, we were looking forward to its opening. And just like that, the business was up and running.

The lovely owner, Alma Paulk, happened to be in the store and told us they'd been open for a couple of weeks. She's gradually adding inventory to the beautiful tall and narrow shelves. What she already has stocked is awesome. Manuka honey and organic emu oil, for instance, are what I bought. Both items I would have had to go online or drive to the outer world to purchase. The convenience of Natural Wonders will be nice. Not to say Alma's knowledge about the products.

Along with natural and organic ointments, lotions, supplements, and such, Natural Wonders sells teas, flours,  spices, chips, and other packaged food items. It also offers coffee, juices, freshly baked goods, soup, and sandwiches. The store was grilling organic chicken on their deck for enchiladas. Speaking of the deck. It looks like a great place to hang out. The breeze through the redwood tree branches was very refreshing.

Natural Wonders is located at 215 Third Street, between the Mission Clocks and Watches and the Daisy Saloon.

A note to the FTC: I was not paid or received anything for free to write about this neat new business. Nope, not at all. Unless, you want to count the information Alma gave me about Manuka honey and emu oil.
