A Reflection Bonus in a Window

I've been having fun meeting new bloggers and seeing various parts of the world through a different linky party every day of this past week. Dear readers, I hope you've taken the opportunity to check out some of the links as well. Today, I'm hooking up at Weekend Reflections, which is a site where folks share their photos of reflections caught on surfaces such as windows.

When I took this photo, my focus was on the sign, so as to get information about the upcoming The Best of San Benito County Food & Wine on October 26, 2014, which is a fundraiser for the Emmaus House. Upon finally viewing my photo, I was delighted to see that I caught a reflection of sky and The Vault behind me. Also in the reflection is the Husband's head!

Here Grows Asparagus

I came across another gorgeous sign by the Ag in Classroom project, sponsored by the San Benito County Farm Bureau. The sign is located on Fallon Road.

Want to see a few other signs done by this project? Check out this link.

Post 999: Alleys of Hollister

I have yet to find an alley in Hollister that dead ends at a brick wall on all sides. You know, like in the movies. Nor, for that matter, an alley with a tumble down or rickety fence to climb up and over to run away from the "bad guys".

As some of you, dear readers, know, the Husband and I like sidetracking through an alley when we suddenly come upon one whether walking, bicycling, or driving. There are 18 alleys, according to the Google map of downtown Hollister. For past posts about some alleys, check out this link: Alleys.

Remembering the Tres Pinos Hotel

Standing at the corner of Fifth Street and Highway 25 in Tres Pinos is an E Clampus Vitis plaque commemorating the Tres Pinos Hotel that was there from 1873 to 1958. The hotel was originally known as the Southern Pacific Hotel, which Southern Pacific built when it brought the railroad to Tres Pinos. If I understand the various references correctly, Juan Etcheverry, who owned 1,400 acres of land in and around Tres Pinos, took over the hotel and it became known as the Etcheverry Hotel.

What was the hotel like? Here's what Marjorie Pierce wrote on page 129 in East of the Gabilans:
". . .the hotel was a bustling place. It was to Tres Pinos what the Plaza Hotel was to San Juan. Hay and grain buyers and stockmen would come and stay. The train would stop overnight before going back so the railroad men also were guests. The station was across from the hotel and the turntable was a short distance away. In the kitchen there were three Chinese cooks to handle the busy dining room. There was a pool room, a public room with a fireplace and poker tables, and a bar which was probably called a saloon in those days. . . ."

Fairhaven Orchards

Just after you pass Flynn Road while driving south on Highway 25, you can see the agricultural sign for Fairhaven Orchards on the right side of the highway. It's another sign put up by the Ag in the Classroom project sponsored by the San Benito County Farm Bureau. If you'd like to see a few others signs, check out this post.

Fairhaven Orchards produces cherries and Blenheim apricots. Located on Bolsa Road (aka Highway 25), the orchards have been owned and run by the Rajkovich Family since 1958. To learn more about Fairhaven Orchards, check out its website and Facebook page.

Hysterical San Juan Bautista

This sign in San Juan Bautista always cracks me up. But, I wouldn't be surprised if something did happen on that particular spot on Third Street.

The Agricultural Signs in San Benito County

Back in January, I began noticing the beautiful agricultural signs popping up around San Benito County. They showcased both the products and the growers. The signs are part of Ag in the Classroom project sponsored by the San Benito County Farm Bureau. They deserve a big round of  applause for their work!

So far, I've taken photos of three of the agricultural signs. You can find this sign at the southwest corner of Union and Southside Roads.  It's like a scavenger hunt for me. As I take photo of the different signs, I'll post them. To see the other two agricultural signs, click here and here.

Blenheim Apricots

When I was a kid many years ago, Hollister was full of orchards of California Blenheim apricots, the most tastiest apricot around. Today, nearly all of those apricot orchards are gone and only a few local farmers continue to grow Blenheim apricots and produce  dried apricots, apricot jam, apricot syrup, and other artisanal products.

If you're searching for fresh Blenheim apricots, you might contact one of these businesses in Hollister. But, act quickly, the harvest season is almost over.

1962

That's all it says on the sign plate of this building in downtown Hollister. 1962. It's not the address, so I take it to mean that was the year the building was completed. Do you recognize it?

Even under a layer of soot, I think the simplicity of the sign plate looks rather elegant. Still trying to figure what this building is? Click here.

Xylophones in the Making?

Don't these look like xylophones?

Could this be an upcoming xylophone store?

Ah, if only.

The produce market that has been slowly going up next to Speedee Oil in the shopping plaza on Sunnyslope  Road and Airline Highway is showing signs that it may be opening soon. I wonder what fruits and veggies will be covering the xylophone-looking counters.

The "Welcome to Hollister" Sign

Ever since the Welcome to Hollister sign went up a few years ago, I've been taking photos of it. But, it wasn't until the other day that I finally was in the right spot at the right time to get a decent shot of it. Well, about as decent as one can get when it's behind a chain-link fence and on the corner of Highway 25 and San Felipe Road.

It's a handsome sign. Anyone else  think the long building behind the Veterans' Memorial Building is the main building of the San Benito High School?

This Way to the Library

The San Benito County Free Library, under the fantastic direction of Nora Conte, County Librarian, has many physical and online resources to offer our community. Here's the website link for you to find out what's available.

The website may not mention that a magazine swap rack is located in the lobby. You can leave your old magazines there as well as pick up ones that may interest you. Just this week, the Husband and I brought a box full of The New Yorker magazines to the rack. A win-win.

By the way, who else remembers that phrase from their high school Spanish book: ¿Donde esta la biblioteca?

Efficient and Convenient

It's only recently that I noticed that most, if not all, gas stations in town have some kind of shop where you can purchase snacks. That's good to know when you're in a hurry and hungry.

What's Happening?

Isn't it such a bummer when you find out too late about an event? Or, you didn't even know the event happened until much later? For instance, did you know the San Benito Olive Festival was last October or that the Hollister Airshow will be on June 14 and 15, 2014?

Without a daily local newspaper to tell us about upcoming events, we're on our own to find out. Difficult? Not really, once we have an idea where to look.

Did you know that our weekly newspaper—the Hollister Free Lance—has an online calendar? You can check it out anytime.  No subscription is needed. Here's the link.

An even better online source for local happenings, as well as breaking news, is BenitoLink. It reminds me of what the Free Lance used to be when it was a daily paper once upon a time. Here's the BenitoLink site.

Facebook is another good source to learn about events. For example, at the Take 25 to Hollister Facebook page, I post links to upcoming events as I happen to come across them. Here's that link.
A few other Facebook pages where people and organizations share their events are:
And, of course, don't forget to check the bulletin boards at the libraries, supermarkets, and shops.

What sources do you use to find out about upcoming events in our area?

Aloha!

As I turned from taking photos of the gorgeous blossoms in front of City Hall, I spied the happy sign across the street. Aloha Hair Salon. The new business is next door to the Granada Theater on Fifth Street.

Welcome, Aloha Hair Salon!

Name the Highway

Have you seen the new road signs on Highway 25 yet?

The Husband and I saw one yesterday afternoon, as we waited for the light on Hillcrest Road. Were we surprised. We knew there was talk last year about naming Highway 25 to the Pinnacles National Park Highway, but many residents in the southern part of San Benito County were against it.

So, I looked it up. (Ah, sweet Internet, what did I ever do without you?) Turns out our State Senator Anthony Cannella sponsored a bill last year to designate specific sections of Highway 25 as the Pinnacles National Park Highway. According to the bill, which was adopted, the renamed highway runs from "San Benito/Monterey countyline to Sunnyslope Road in the City of Hollister and that portion of Route 25 from San Felipe Road in the City of Hollister to the San Benito/Santa Clara countyline. . . ."

I read that as meaning all of Highway 25. Doesn't the highway cross into Monterey County in the southern part of San Benito County? Something else to look up. I did notice the sign still says "Highway 25" at the intersection of Sunnyslope Road/Tres Pinos Road/25 (or as us old fogeys still call it --Airline Highway).

O'Neill Drive

This beautiful humongous tree is in the center of O'Neill Drive, which is in the residential section of historical downtown Hollister.

O'Neill Drive is a hidden gem, and I'm sure has some interesting history about it. It's not a thorough street in the sense that you enter at one spot and come out another. Nor is it a dead-end street because you drive in a circle around this tree and other trees. It's more like a private driveway, as there are several small homes on the street.

I wonder if the houses could've been built for Navy officers and their families who were based at the Naval Auxiliary Air Station in Hollister during World War II. I also wonder who O'Neill was.

Cheap Seats Pub & Grub

"Hey, Husband! Did you know the awning is in the shape of a baseball hat?"

"Yes. You never noticed that?"

In the seven years or more that Cheap Seats Pub & Grub has been around, it never dawned on my that I have been looking at or walking under a very huge baseball cap. What it actually reminds me of are those nightclub awnings in the 1930s movies. Sometimes the obvious just goes over my head. I was in my 30s when I realized that the logo of the Shell Station is a shell. Duh.

Dunneville Cafe & Market

Have you tried the tri-tip sandwich at the Dunneville Cafe & Market yet? Mine was very tender and oooh so very delicious. After the Husband took his first bite, he didn't think it was too far to drive for a take-out sandwich and fries.

The restaurant is on the northwest corner of San Felipe Road and Shore Road, about nine miles from downtown Hollister.  You can also eat there. It has both indoor and outdoor seating. The patio is lovely and relaxing. And, if you're into bocce ball, or want to try it out, regulation bocce courts are available.

Dunneville Cafe & Market opened in 1972, but a store has stood at that corner for many, many years. When I was a kid, I knew it as Dunneville Store. Our family lived behind it, and I remember going to the store a lot to purchase candy, Nehi soda, and comic books. In my mind's eye, I can see the  candy display around the cash register and the comic book stand in the front window on the left of the door. Ah, yes, nothing like good memories. If you'd like to read another one of mine about Dunneville Store, click here to go to my other blog, Don't Be a Hippie.
