2010 Veterans Parade

It was a beautiful day for a parade through downtown Hollister to honor our military veterans!

  1. In Belgium it was a day off, but nobody knew exactly why, lol !
As it was the end of WW I, there is nobody left anymore. I think next year they will cancel this holiday.

  2. Thanks for the poppy. Those are the ones we used to call a Buddy Poppy. The other ones by the American legion were a little longer petal. Boy, they've been selling those a long time. If I had saved all of mine from one each year, I'd have a large bouquet now..Ha Ha
Some great shots of the parade...

  3. I thought about calling you and going to the parade with you, but it didn't happen.
There aren't many WW2 vets around anymore. Every time (and it was weekly) I'd take Dad to the Veteran's Hospital in Palo Alto, men and women would come running up to him to thank him for his service. At 91 he was one of the last of his generation who was still around to tell the stories. I remember him marching in this parade in Hollister with the VFW veterans from San Juan.

    Great photos, Susie.

  4. Thanks for your meaningful comment on my blog. You're right; it ain't over until it's over. Even then - as demonstrated by this post- our legacy carries on.

  5. Gattina, It was only a few years ago that I finally learned that the origins of our Veterans Day was WWI. I always thought it was about honoring WWII veterans. I'm glad the holiday is all about honoring our veterans period.

Manzanita, you're welcome and thank you. I read your post earlier and that motivated me to find out if the poppies were still being sold. It was all by honor system. A basket of poppies on a truck bed with a can for donations next to it.

Bradley, thank you. There's always the next time. And, as we heard one guy say, Hollister has a parade almost every other day. :-)

    Robyn, you're welcome. :-)

  6. I really like your capture of small town America. Homemade parades are always so stirring.
